Abstract. – These notes have been conceived as an in-depth critical review of the compendium that includes a number of studies Klaus Martin Girardet devoted to the process which led to the end of the Roman Republic and the advent of the Augustian Principate. The main results reached through Girardet’s juridical approach has been subjected here to elaborate detailed criticism. Following this line is an updated state of the issue concerning the nature and definition of power held by the main Imperatores of the end of the Republic and of the beginning of the Empire (Pompeius, Caesar, Brutus and Cassius, Antonius, Octavian/Augustus, Germanicus and Tiberius).
